General:

Context:

Since May 2015 the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies along with the Hellenic Red Cross have worked with local communities on the frontline of the migration response to provide relief and assistance to people seeking safety in Europe. Assistance included primary health care, hygiene promotion, food and relief distribution, first aid, psychosocial support, Restoring Family Links and cash assistance.

As an implementing partner with UNHCR, Cash is being provided by IFRC currently in 18 sites in all Northern Greece including Central Macedonia, Epirus and Thessaly, as well as in urban self-accommodated locations. IFRC also provides support to cash assistance cardholders living in UNHCR Accommodations. The Multifunctional Centre (MFC) in Thessaloniki is where the IFRC urban cash team operates from and is a social day-centre that aims to provide a range of integration services and support to refugees and migrants, where the main objective is to help them cope with their current situation through counselling and guidance.

Job Purpose:

The Cultural Mediator will be dedicated to assist with translation and communication in the Cash Transfer Program activities at the MFC urban location and in sites across North Greece ensuring safe delivery of cash programming, as well as providing information and guidance to the community in close coordination with other team members.

The Cultural Mediator’s main purpose is to assist with communications in all aspects of the cash program. The Cultural mediator will support IFRC CTP team in engagement with beneficiaries, providing translations for various cash program activities, including enrolment, card distribution and monthly certification. The incumbent may also provide field community information sessions and MFC orientation sessions in their own language and act as Crowd Control in various cash activities.

She/he will also facilitate sessions or helpdesk at the MFC and/or in sites under the guidance of Senior Officer, ensuring all program implementation is in accordance with IFRC standards and principles.

Job duties and responsibilities:

  • Provide interpretation and translation (both verbal and written) services for the CTP team in various program activities; enrolment, certification and helpdesk
  • Explain the project’s activities and objectives to the population
  • Provide input, translation and update relevant information materials to be distributed
  • Ensure women, children, elderly, people with disabilities, illiterate and other vulnerable groups have equal access to information and feedback channels according to their needs
  • With the support of colleagues, ensure beneficiaries who no longer meet eligibility criteria receive the correct case management as per guidelines and procedures

Ideal Profile:

Education and Experience:

  • Degree or training in interpretation / translation / cultural mediation will be preferred
  • Proven experience of at least 6 months as a cultural mediator
  • Experience in providing support and interpretation services to vulnerable or diverse groups and experience in working with migrants/refugee/asylum seekers
  • Experience within the Red Cross and Red Cross Movement or other humanitarian organization

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Advanced understanding of the refugee, asylum seeker and migrant context
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to deal with issues in a diplomatic, professional and confidential manner
  • Self-motivated, proactive with good judgement and initiative
  • Computer skills (Windows, word processing, power point, spreadsheets)

Languages:

  • Fluency in Arabic and French (both spoken and written) is required
  • Good command of the English language (both spoken and written)
  • Sufficient command of spoken and written Greek will be an asset
  • Other languages such as Urdu, Pashto, Kurdish, Turkish will be an asset
